Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri is awaiting the course of the Iranian-American escalation on the one hand, and the results of the visit of the President of the Republic, General Joseph Aoun, to the United States on the other hand, while stressing that his main priority at this stage is to get the South out of the “bottleneck” as quickly as possible. Berri expressed his hope that President Joseph Aoun's meeting with US President Donald Trump will lead to positive and serious results that are in the interest of liberating Lebanon and achieving its inalienable rights, stressing that what he means is reaching a real solution, regardless of where this solution comes from. Berri revealed that President Aoun contacted him before he left for Washington, to put him in the atmosphere of the visit and consult on the pillars of the Lebanese position, noting that he stressed to him the necessity of adhering to two basic matters: consolidating the ceasefire, and ensuring complete Israeli withdrawal from the occupied southern territories. In response to a question about whether he feared that the region would slide again into war in light of the American-Iranian escalation, Berri said: “Why is this happening now? What is it called? It is a form of war.” Regarding internal affairs, the Speaker of the House of Representatives was surprised by the attempts to hold him or the “duo” responsible for not approving a number of vital laws during the last legislative session, considering that the facts are clear, and he added: “The sun is rising and the people are harsh.” He also revealed that his political aide, Representative Ali Hassan Khalil, and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Elias Bou Saab, conducted side consultations behind the scenes of the session to arrange matters, and that the communications had come close to reaching a result that would have allowed the amnesty law to be passed, had it not been for the withdrawal of well-known representatives and the loss of a quorum. Regarding the demands of the “Lebanese Forces” to shorten the mandate of the current parliament and hold early parliamentary elections, Berri did not show much interest in the proposal, and only said: “Maybe they are thinking that they will add something more.” Away from politics, Berri revealed his sporting inclinations, explaining that he was supporting the Spanish team in the World Cup final against Argentina, justifying this by saying: “Because the group is friendly and their positions are honorable, not only on the political level, but also on the level of UNIFIL, in whose ranks they participate in the south.”
